On Monday, 7 2020, the International Olympic Committee announced that breakdancing will debut in the 2024 Paris Olympics as a sport.
As announced by the committee, this new addition is part of the Olympic Agenda 2020 reforms which are geared towards making the event fit for the post-pandemic world.
Breakdancing will be referred to as “breaking” sport. The sport is aimed to attract the younger audience and participants to the Olympics.
Other notable additions that will debut in the 2021 Tokyo Olympics include skateboarding, sport climbing, and surfing. The Tokyo Olympic Games were to be held in 2020 but postponed to 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The breakdancing competition will feature 16 b-boys and 16 b-girls; the terms used to describe the breakdancers. They will compete for silverware on a one vs one battle.
This will be the first dance that appears in the Olympic games as a sport.
