A few hours after she dropped her new movie trailer, the music celebrity and legendary Sia has received some backlashes from her critics over autism claims. This is after she cast Maddie Ziegler in the movie as the lead character rather than someone who is actually autistic.
This is totally unacceptable and there are no excuses, you should know better than to allow able bodied & neurotypical to represent the disabled community. It's incredibly offensive as is the infantalisation of the character. Sickened. And not even captioned. Don't release this.— Jordana Golbourn (@JordanaGol) November 20, 2020
"This is totally unacceptable and there are no excuses, you should know than to allow able-bodied and neurotypical to represent the disabled community, it's incredibly offensive as is the infantalization of the character and not even captioned, don't release this," read one of the comments.
In defense, Sia replied, saying that she had tried to cast an autistic girl, but it was so stressful and unpleasant to her, so she decided to pick on Maddie instead.
"Several autistic actors, myself included, responded to these tweets; we could have acted it on short notice. These excuses are just 'that- excuses.” criticized another person. The fact of the matter is zero effort was made to include anyone who is autistic," she added.
Sia again responded saying that maybe the person was just but a poor actor, which is why he wasn't picked on. She researched for three years about autism. The movie, known as Music, is expected to be out early in 2021 and she is hopeful that it will do well in the industry.
